Hello everyone,
Im wondering if anyone has experienced this sort of behavior before, I
do a daily backup of peachtree2003 at the end of the day, and then a tape
backup of the backup folder. 4 days ago i started recieving the error that
this operation requires single user mode , try when all other users are out
message, i have double checked that there is no one else in the system, and
the only fix seems to be to restart the machine, then backup, now the backup
saves ok, but when another user tries to access peachtree they get
status.dat is locked. there have been no hardware or enviromental changes to
the network , we log those and ive double checked with other that would be
responcible for those actions just to make sure there wasnt and they forgot
to log them.
Any suggestions would be appriciated
Thanks

We have experienced this. Lately, maybe in the last few months, it happens
more and more.
I don’t know how to fix this, but here is something to check. While checking
that everyone is off the system, do a "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" on all running
Windows machines. If you see "W32mkde" on any of the machines, your instance
of PT will think someone else is online. You can select "W32mkde" and choose
to "End Task" and that should allow you to continue to backup.
As I said, more and more on our system when PTW (V8) is shut down, it leaves
the "W32mkde" running for some reason.
And even in the last two weeks, "W32mkde" will shut itself down while PT is
in use. I’ve never seen this prior to now, but the server particularly is
subject to it lately.
Good Luck!

Further, anytime Peachtree has an ABEND (Abnormal End), you must
manually shut down the W32MKDE engine on the ABEND terminal. It’s a
separate program which runs the local Btrieve workstation engine for
each user. It doesn’t shut down automatically if there’s an internal PT
problem that causes the ABEND.

You should only have to shut down W32mkde manually (Ctrl-Alt-Del) if
Peachtree crashes. It is normal for this file to stay running if
Peachtree closes normally. It is a separate program, an engine to manage
records. Peachtree isn’t the only program that uses this engine so it
stays installed once loaded. Note that even though it is running after a
normal shutdown, all Peachtree files are closed and functions in
Peachtree that require single user accesss will perform correctly.
If Peachtree crashes, all files are not closed necessitation the manual
shutdown of W32mkde or a reboot. If you do not shut w32mkde down
manually when Peachtree crashes you can end up with multiple conections
to the server for the same user even though only one W32mkde is running
on the PC that crashed. Exiting Peachtree again does not correct this
scenario. This could also cause the single user access message to appear
even though you think everyone is out.
In Win98 you can watch this with NetWatcher. It will show open files and
connections. By using this program you can exit PT and see the number of
open files drop. You can crash PT and see the files remain open. If
w32mkde is not shutdown and PT is restarted you can see a second
connection to the server show up with its own files open. Using net
watcher you can disconnect the first instance. The trick is figuring
which one is the one to disconnect: Have the user get out, see thier
files go to zero, disconnect the -other- connection.
